When we use the word holy, as in a holy person, we usually associate this with a righteous or pious person. If we use this concept when interpreting the word holy in the Hebrew Bible then we are misreading the text as this is not the meaning of the Hebrew word qadosh.
Qadosh literally means “to be set apart for a special purpose”.
A related word, qedesh, is one who is also set apart for a special purpose but not in the same way we think of “holy” but is a male prostitute (Deut 23:17). Israel was qadosh because they were separated by the other nations as servants of YHWH. The furnishings in the tabernacle were qadosh as they were not to be used for anything except for the work in the tabernacle. While we may not think of ourselves as “holy” we are in fact set apart from the world to be YHWH’s servants and representatives.
Psalm 4:3
But know that YHWH hath set apart him that is Elohimly for himself: YHWH will hear when I call unto him.
Exodus 19:6
And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an set-apart nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.
Leviticus 20:26
And ye shall be holy unto me: for I YHWH am set-apart, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine.
Deuteronomy 14:2
For thou art an set-apart people unto YHWH thy Elohim, and YHWH hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto himself, above all the nations that are upon the earth.
Deuteronomy 26:
18And YHWH hath avouched thee this day to be his peculiar people, as he hath promised thee, and that thou shouldest keep all his commandments; 19And to make thee high above all nations which he hath made, in praise, and in name, and in honour; and that thou mayest be an set-apart people unto YHWH thy Elohim, as he hath spoken.
Rev. 2:
2And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
3For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.
4And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.
Leviticus 20:24
But I have said unto you, Ye shall inherit their land, and I will give it unto you to possess it, a land that floweth with milk and honey: I am YHWH your Elohim, which have separated you from other people.
Ezra 10:
11Now therefore make confession unto YHWH Elohim of your fathers, and do his pleasure: and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives.
12Then all the congregation answered and said with a loud voice, As thou hast said, so must we do.
Nehemiah 10:
28And the rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the porters, the singers, the Nethinims, and all they that had separated themselves from the people of the lands unto the law of Elohim, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, every one having knowledge, and having understanding;
29They clave to their brethren, their nobles, and entered into a curse, and into an oath, to walk in Elohim’s law, which was given by Moses the servant of Elohim, and to observe and do all the commandments of YHWH our Lord, and his judgments and his statutes;
30And that we would not give our daughters unto the people of the land, not take their daughters for our sons:
31And if the people of the land bring ware or any victuals on the sabbath day to sell, that we would not buy it of them on the sabbath, or on the holy day: and that we would leave the seventh year, and the exaction of every debt.
Jeremiah 10
1Hear ye the word which YHWH speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:
2Thus saith YHWH, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
